"Mrs Cotton's Candies" London Dungeons 2014

Some years ago I was asked to come up with a concept design for a sweet shop for the London Dungeons. What a fantastic opportunity for some fun! My premise was that the last person you would want running a sweet shop is a serial poisoner. Mary Ann Cotton (1832 - 1873) poisoned eight of her own children, seven stepchildren, her mother, three husbands, a lover and an inconvenient friend - with arsenic. When finally brought to trial she tried to blame her wallpaper.

Why violently bright green wallpaper?

Because arsenic was used to make a bright green dye used in wallpaper, paint and of all things food colourings for cakes and sweets. Green rooms were the height of fashion in Georgian and Victorian England and this caused a lot of ill health and even deaths because the arsenic in the paper and paint reacted with damp and formed a poisonous vapour. Truly drop-dead decor.

Napoleon is thought to have died on Elba of arsenic poisoning and for years it was believed to have been the result of an assassination, possibly by the British government of the time. In actual fact the wallpaper in Napoleon's rooms was recently found to have contained arsenic, so Napoleon was quite likely inadvertently poisoned by British wallpaper manufacturers instead.

As the bright green dye was also, even more bizarrely, used in sweets and cakes, Mrs Cotton’s Candy Floss in virulent green seems appropriate as would various other brightly coloured green sweets, paper bags and general presentation.
